Cool, so Kuma was a revolutionary back then. I wonder if he joined the Shichibukai as an undercover agent
I wonder if Dragon's name has any connection to the Tenryuubito themselves. It seems to be more of a symbol for him than just a name, looking at his ship and the shirt he is wearing on the coverpage.

It sure would be awesome if the hidden century featured the story of a mercenary become king named Griffiths, and a General (with the will of D) named Gatsu. Yeah, it's not going to happen, but the comparison is apt. These Nobles are just as foul as Berserk's.

it also has a weird snail-armor, more twisted than usual...

The black den den mushis are used for eavesdropping on other calls. We've seen them with Kizaru and Nami, and maybe Smoker too.
Interesting thought that someone over at Mangahelpers pointed out:
Ace's tattoo on his left arm (ASCE), the S has an ex through it and it looks very similar to Sabo's Jolly Roger on the last page.

Now I think Oda stated that the tattoo was just a mistake by the tattoo artist and Ace had in cross it out, but I am not sure.
Probably doesn't mean much, but found it intriguing.
Like you said he already stated it was just a character design quirk, if it was anything else he never would have mentioned it differently
