It's a nobrainer Mashima would make the disciple fight the daughter. No way around it, even though what you say about Gray is certainly true. At least he has more brains than Natsu, if nothing else.

So yeah, that "twist" became obvious the moment she asked him to use Ice Shell on Hades. "Oh, she's not acting nice to get him to lower his guard to attack him, she's acting nice to get him to betray her master for her, so she can run off with her psycho obsession."
