I was expecting something more critical and damning. They really could use some critical analysis and change, but then they'd lose the weirdness/peculiarities that make Japan so charming to all the otaku and Japanophiles in the world. I wonder if that would be such a bad thing...
Some notes from the movie: they didn't include the large number of Japanese expats in the world, so 2/100 isn't accurate.
For the food waste remember that a lot of food is perishable, and being an island nation, it's particularly expensive and problematic to redistribute food that is not wanted/needed.
Lastly, the economy in Japan isn't as healthy as the author stated. A lot of turmoil/suicide/social problems are due to economic problems in the country.
