New rep colors, and another forum upgrade

TL;DR: COLORS!!!


On Sapphire's suggestion and with Kraco's help on making some new colorful boxes, I've implemented a change to the rep display system. Now it fills bars, then replaces them with the next higher value ones. From lowest to highest, the colors are:

dark green
light green
dark blue
light blue
purple

Also, heads-up, sometime tonight I'll be knocking the forums down for a couple minutes to upgrade vbulletin again. Should be minor, already tested it out in a dev instance, but probably 15 minutes or so.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled forum activities...

Would be interesting... if the reputation feature wasn't completely and utterly dead.

Then again i guess this might arouse interest in it again? I doubt it, but lets hope.

Just more class warfare

Too many colors all over the place, I liked just having it green.

I'm not opposed to the introduction of more rep levels (since I never posted enough when it was dynamic and new in order to raise my own to max, so this may give me a fighting chance!), but I have to agree that there may be too many colours now. The light blue and purple looks fine, but I think the dark blue draws too much attention/sticks out too much.

Nice update in any case, though!

Fair enough. We're gonna let it sink in a bit, then see how people feel about it and what else we might do to make it better.

Meanwhile, the forum upgrade piece I mentioned is done. Let me know if you notice any weird theme regressions or anything broken that wasn't before!

Blue was on purpose quite a rare colour here, both before and after the major forum engine upgrade a year ago. Now it's only present in the little arrows on the forum views and nowhere inside the threads themselves - or that was the case before this reputation meter change. I believe that's one reason why they might catch the eye so easily, at least in the beginning.

With the icons only a handful of pixels in size, I went for near maximum contrast. If it turns out a real concern on the long run that they are too attention catching (breaking the harmony), I'll adjust them.

I didn't realise Kraco was that far ahead. Fuck.

Hey, so... I have a question. If the rep levels/colours have changed, when exactly does one obtain a custom title now? That's been a goal of mine for the past couple of years now, and I felt like I was close.

the custom title is based on what your rep bar says(mouseover), I'm not exactly sure when it unlocks though.

I don't think anyone changed how many points you need to get a custom title.

I don't think the color overlay really goes well together, not all that least. Just look at mine, it's an eye sour to a very clean and serene looking forum.

lol, that made me laugh. It's not a game where you can "level up" through your own effort, it's dependent on what people determine to be a good post and is totally voluntary. The system isn't as active as it once was nor was it ever used for the intended purpose. It became a tool for circling jerking and e-penis status.

But I do complement the effort to improve the forums.

yeah, the light green->dark blue transition is a bit jarring. Maybe a lower-intensity version would ease that up a bit...

I could have a look at the colours this coming weekend. Green/blue is obviously no problem to differentiate under most circumstances; it's the blue/blue difference that made me seek quite glaring shades.

Alright. The darker blue has been adjusted slightly. Dunno if you need to refresh your browser caches manually to see the change or if it refreshes after a while automatically. The new blue was judged better by a statistically significant group of two people and thus deemed an immense success.

Naturally, after a while you won't remember how bad the old blue looked like and can start to complain about this new one as well.

The new blue is still a little jarring when combined with the green, but it looks much better than the older, darker blue. Thanks for changing it.

Will changing blue for yellow do much good? Or will that look too much like a yellow card?

We decided against yellow because yellow means evil.

If you don't like blue over green then level up faster, biatch!

Only other colour I can think of is aqua then, if you were still thinking about addressing this.

Did the rep colours reset to the default ones during the move to your own server, Complich?
