Not everybody can pull off Suiken. You have to be born with it. Its like a natural talent but you have to wield it.

Even though he cant use any of the other jutsus but his commitment to taijutsu is unheard of. Thats why he can open those gates and not many of others can do that. He is not a genius but he is not far away from it.

Also sometimes it takes more than just brains to get ahead. You need determination and courage which he has plenty of.

His life long ambition is to surpass Neji. I hope to see Kishi elaborating a bit more on that in the near future.

I think he has improved in the last three years. I hope one of the Akatsuki member is taijutsu user so Lee can get an opportunity to fight him.

I'd have to argee to the above statements as Rock Lee is the Man, his fights are truly the best the anime has to offer, I'm going to join this group as soon as i find that link to (I know it's right above this post..I am a noobie of these forums but I hopefully able to clink things with a mouse)

and on the note of him being a genius thats really a matter of what you think a genius is. No I'm not refering to what is writen in some dictionary, I'm refering to what a genius is in your personal opinion

in the naruto world, "genius of hard work" is a contradiction...
genius = person who is inherently gifted with bloodlines/chakra/talent
opposite of a person who has to struggle to keep up with the upper tier of ninja

I'm almost positive that there will eventually be an Akatsuki member who's primarily a Taijutsu shinobi, which will call for the efforts of Team Gai to defeat. And, at that time .. I will be glued to the manga pages / animated episodes (Yeah, as if the anime'll ever catch up ..), like the Rock Lee fanboy I am.

Rock Lee v. Neji? Neji. All day, every day.

Rock Lee's too nice to open the gates for nothing. Neji would seriously have to piss him off, and diss on Gai for a while, to really get Rock Lee pumped enough to really unleash hell.

Ther are two choices either Lee improves his drunken fist or Kishi lets him open more gates.

I am sure we wil see Lee fighting Neji at some point in the series.

I don't know how his Drunken Boxing could have improved, since that was more of a fighting talent based on instinct, and subconscious actions. However, I'm sure Lee's able to open up another gate or two. I'd like to think that Lee's trained with the Gates open, and is able to exert himself to a certain level before sustaining any level of discomfort. Similar to Gai, who opened up six gates on a whim, and after eliminating "Kisame," landed all calm and collected with only a single bead of sweat and kept on moving forward.

If Lee could be comfortable fighting with the Gates unlocked, he'd be even more astonishing.

And, Lee v. Neji sometime soon? Yeah .. wishful thinking. They're too busy with other enemies outside and worrying about Sharingan heirs and people with it, and those mysteriously acquiring it to ever do anything coo' like that.

Probably not a "genious", but the fact that he can do what not many else can makes him special.

the reason im even arguing this at all is because I feel the purpose behind kishimoto's design of lee's character is to show that people who are determined can still compete with those who are just inherently gifted. That's why i think its important to keep the two seperate to make that distinction.

Good point. I was just going off of Kakashi's comment when Lee opened the 4th gate: "Is he a genious after all?" - or whatever translation you prefer. I guess when I really think about it, genious does not = special ability.

Fuck no. You guys are taking the whole genius of hardwork thing to literally. It was something done by kishimoto to show that rock lee can compete against those who are naturally gifted. Through his determination he was able to achieve something greater which is what makes him so inspiring. Spring Time of Youth Forever. I hope we see Rock Lee perfect his drunken master style. In order for him to improve he needs to get more liqoured up. Lets see him down a few forties before he gets unleshed. I really do hope that in the next manga arc Kishimoto comes up with some excuse to bring back druken boxer lee. Hell I don't see why the fillers don't come up with some kind of excuse to use drunken boxer lee. Man that would kick so much ass to see him again plus the animators would have a ball bringing him to life. Damn you fillers give us more drunken boxer lee!

What if it possible for someone who is not born with a gift but still manages to do the same.

His unbelievable talent through hard work shines much brighter and holds much more value than the lack luster presentations of a proclaimed genius like Sasuke.

I do not think Rock Lee is a genius, either. Saying such does not steal any of this proverbial thunder, though.

In addition, Kakashi questioned his possible genius status out of pure amazement and bewilderment over what Rock Lee was doing. No one expected that. I am sure the Hokage was surprised that a Genin was capable of going so far, too.

I'm sure you read the manga, Xan'. Check out Lee's face when requesting Neji to ride piggyback style, for training. Pure comedy.
