I dont think there is such a mechanism, judging from how the spirit system works. Its an internal thing, and has little to do with external influences, so I doubt an external barrier would work. Im guessing he is just afraid of crushing himself underneath the mess summoning amil gaul in such a small place would cause.

The cell had just metal bar windows. He could have easily thrown the shard out of the window causing Amil Gaul or Rambos (either would have sufficed) to spawn outside and break the wall to make a way out.
