There are actually two things you could do in this situation:
1) You could go to your player's settings and try to tweak the options for the subtitles so that it would stand out better, by overriding the placement of the subs to somewhere else on the screen, or by adjusting the font itself. Since I'm not using VLC but MPC, I'm afraid I can't give specific help.
2) You could try to find a video that has no subtitles, and then, if needed, adjust the delay for the subs so that they would once again match the spoken lines. I would think it logical only the beginning of the video could have any difference, and thus the rest should be in sync. Hopefully...
