Just the same, you could say "why not use one of those giant shurikens like Mizuki had in the first episode?" The simplest of attacks is enough to kill an enemy, but if an enemy can cancel it, then you need to try something stronger. Under normal circumstances, water beats fire, yet Kakuzu's wind-fed fire simply overpowered Kakashi's water wall. Sure I can't see why shurikens made of the same material as asuma's blades can't be used to create wind shurikens, but I bet they wouldnt be as strong as a wind shuriken being continuously fed super-concentrated, super-accelerated chakra from something like a rasengan.

...where am I getting all this from anyway? :P


@EpyonNext: It takes 3 to make the wind shuriken rasengan. 2 to make the rasengan and a 3rd to infuse it with wind chakra.
