I was thinking the same thing as DB_Hunter: if a kage needs rescuing by a genin, then all the villages could be in big trouble if Akatsuki comes to town. I'd imagine the other Akatsuki members are stronger than Deidara and Sasori, so if kages are that weak, Akatsuki could take over the world if they wanted to, instead of having to capture these magical beasts to obtain power.

Besides, you can see in the animation that it's an empty sand shell.
