I think Cross Game is Adachi's masterpiece because it brings together so many of the elements that make his manga good. It has the tragedy, the comedy, the sport spirit, and the romance that he has developed through the making of his previous manga.
It is just that if you read Cross Game after Adachi's other works, it hardly seems original, and it seems to lose some points because of that. If I judge Cross Game as a standalone work, I think it surpasses all of its predecessors in numerous aspects, including art. All it lacks now is a proper ending and epilogue, and if Adachi manages that, I have no complaints (which is rare).
