    Shouldn't the classics fit a bit more?

    Like:
    Monster
    Gankutsuou
    Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars
    LOGH

    For newer ones:
    Steins Gate
    Time of Eve
    Tatami Galaxy

    It's hard to recommend stuff without fighting and fantasy. That only leaves sci-fi if you want a relatively smart and complex story. Other awesome anime are more episodic or comedy.

    Maybe by clever he meant mystery?

    In that case:
    Dennou Coil
    Book Girl
    Denpa Teki na Kanojo
    Spiral: The Bonds of Reason (has no ending though)
    Subete ga F ni Naru (perhaps too pretentious, just like your friend)
