I actually agree with pretty much everything you said, but I feel the need to note here that being a ninja actually means completing your mission by any means necessary. Samurai and other honourable people followed a code of conduct, at least on the surface and ideally, but ninja were tools to do the dirty work.

But I seriously doubt there has been a Naruto viewer (or reader) who didn't hope they would use fricking swords. A man with a sword always overpowers an empty handed man statistically so it would make bloody sense to have one, even if it's just a short one for easy carrying.
