the normal ninja sword is only like 2 or 3 times longer than a kunai
it probably only goes from your upper chest down to your waiste so preforming some easy seals like that from kage bushin won't be a problem... the sword is called Wakizashi and is like 40 cm long, nearly everyone has in mind that they use long swords like a ultra-sized katana [which weren't that big after all] because of hollywood, but in fact they used weapons like a sickle on a rope, staffs and really short swords (like the wakizashi because in a small room a longsword is practically useless)
to preform complex nin-jutsu u need time anyways so it shouldn't be a problem to put the sword into the ground or sheath
when i saw the first 20 episodes of naruto everything seemed perfect.
there were ninjas who used poison, many many weapons (which didn't appear again later)
ninjas were famous for creaiting and inventing new weapons and poisons thats why they were so incalculably. the demonbrothers were the only ones together with sasori who even used poisons, haku had these nice needle-like weapons zabuza this amazing long sword (which wasn realistic but cool :P) sasuke showed us the shuriken for the first time when he fought agains kakashi (they even introduced this weapon perfectly, a shuriken was very small so it is impossible to spot it when you find an "opening"[as they call it] because of the hole in the middle it makes a sound to irritate the enemy so it is a perfect weapon when you are hidden and later in naruto they even used the shurikan in melee which is also correct) naruto used the kunai and then later this amazing big throw-thingy (sry totally forgot the name) when sasuke and naruto fought zabuza together. but shortly after the sound four (one of them used a bow, thats was so cool!!!) everything stopped.
after seeing all this i excepted a Dao or Jin (is it spelled correctly?) and with Ten-Ten i thought my exception would be fulfilled but well... she isn't shown often
only the movies and fillers (!) showed new weapons , for example Lee used a staff (which was a very common weapon for a ninja) but what happened? all i see now are shuriken and kunais which are not even used properly... they are simply useless
it's like someone else writes the story now, its simply not the same naruto
at first nin-jutsu was used to show that ninjas have inhuman strength or speed, that they have some mysterious power and now it goes in the direction of DBZ
but they don't have to, martial artisst are able to do like 100 strikes in a minute each could be a fatal blow (to me that is amazing enough, i would even call this madness if you are able to do it).. so there is no need to show us the rasengan that often
do you know "fight science" (it is a show in america i think), after seeing this and the first 50 episodes of naruto i excepted so much..
http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=hmLTr9zFegQ for example (im not sure if it was in this episode but they even compared chinese short-blades which staffs or longswords or ninjas with elite soldiers..it was pretty cool.. they showed every strength and weakness the series in german was called "galileo mystery" but i think they got everything from "fight science" because it looked fairly similiar.
edit: btw i m not talking about realism here, its just that a great fight like gaara vs lee, which involved weaponry, nin jutsu and great tai-jutsu is to rare.. in shippudden there is for example only the fight with sasori so far which is similiar to the "old style naruto".
most of the time its just ultimate 1 vs ultimate 2 and other aspects like gen-jutsu or taijutsu and weaponry seem forgotten. i m totally aware that naruto isn't a movie based on a true story so i don't mind unrealistic scenes lol
but simply watch the openings of naruto... the openings have BY FAR the best fighting scenes in it.. you can cleary see a combination of jutsu and martial arts there which is lacking in the actual anime
what happened to episodes like 30 or 49? (especially 30 i think this was the best episode in the whole anime)
in episode 45 something however gave me hope again.. it was when yamato catched sakura before she could hit the ground... the movement of sakura when she jumped from tree to tree (with naruto choosing a different direction in the background) and yamato sliding to reduce his speed is what i want to see in fights... a combination of good moves ,ninjutsu and maybe even weaponry (like during the chuunin exam)
