I had jury duty today. Went and sat down in the waiting room for 20 minutes to find out that they don't need any jurors today and we are all excused for 1 year. Winning!

That there's not a single cloud in sight now during the solar eclipse. Perfect!

I'm super jealous. Doesn't seem like North America gets a lot of these.

I remember seeing one partial annual eclipse when I was in about 3rd grade.

When I run out of mousepad, I don't smile. So I buy more mousepad. Now I smile.

Is this a Star Wars reference or have I just been watching too many geek shows that reference too many geek movies?

For God will not permit that we shall know what is to come... those who by some sorcery or by some dream might come to pierce the veil that lies so darkly over all that is before them may serve by just that vision to cause that God should wrench the world from its heading and set it upon another course altogether and then where stands the sorcerer? Where the dreamer and his dream?

I just informed my subordinates that they need to work through the holiday weekend. They got all serious and sad.

    Then April Fools!

You know, it's true money doesn't buy happiness, but it definitely has its perks. So I haven't actually made any realized working income since... October (?), and of course, my bills are still $2000+ per month living in LA and all. I've mostly just been coasting, playing video games, and working on my own projects. About to head on a 3 week trip to Japan with some friends, then after that probably buckling down and finding some more steady work. I decided to log into my money center app, since I haven't done ANYTHING financially with my accounts for a while to see what the damages were.

Yeah... apparently my net worth has gone up 13% since then. WTF?

I'd normally say "good work", except you didn't work.

    It's all unrealised right?

Isn't the adage to invest wisely and not fuss over it for a while?

When you move stuff you lose more.

Yeah, the majority of my gains are in retirement accounts I can't withdrawal from for a long time anyway, but still nice to see, regardless

While it's always nice to see your net worth go up, it's a bit foolhardy to count retirement account fluctuations toward your current financial situation, especially if those accounts are invested in the broad market where they will increase and decrease in value at the whim of the stock market. If you touch that money now, the penalty will more than offset any gains, as I'm sure you know.

Visa stock recently split 1 for 4.

Of course, but as far as liquid or near-liquid assets go, I have enough to last 5 years or so at my current burn rate provided I have zero income whatsoever. I'm not too concerned about that.

    My biggest gainers are:
UNH (bought in 2008 and 2009)
AAPL (bought in 2008 and 2013)
IPGP (bought in 2009. This one is up 720% for me. Too bad I didn't put a lot of money into it.)
