An interesting choice to split it in two completely separate stories... series of events instead of using the same to tell both, traditionally taking turns. I guess they count on the immense popularity of K-ON to boost sales twice as much if they are separate...

I hope it's not two completely separate series but a pair with crossover events for readers of both series, while working well as a standalone for readers of just one. Not unlike Tsubasa Chronicles / xxxHolic.
