“The Two Types of Anime Otaku” according to 2ch (sankaku link)

edit: for the convenience of those at work/school, here's a cut/paste of the article.

I don't give the grouping of A and B much merit since there are plenty of cross-over personalities on this very forum already (in fact, from those I'm familiar with, I'd say very few actually fit well in either categories), but the sub-options at least give a bit of food for thought.

    ----------------------------

“The Two Types of Anime Otaku”

2ch believes it has successfully divided anime otaku into two distinct types:

    Type A:

    - A person who simply enjoys “anime.”
    - Is proud of Japan’s anime.
    - Evaluates anime based on direction, voice acting, art, etc.
    - Hates shallow anime with no real content.
    - Story emphasis >>>>> Moe anime.
    - A recent example would Higashi no Eden. Fans of anime like Lain or Ghost in the Shell would probably be this kind.

    Type B:

    - A person who simply enjoys “characters.”
    - Will watch an anime if it includes cute or beautiful characters.
    - Doesn’t care if story is awful, as long as the characters are of interest.
    - Evaluates anime based on which seiyuu are in it and what the characters look like.
    - Loves moe elements. Doesn’t like complex anime.
    - The otaku the media picks up on are usually this kind.
    - Doesn’t know that much about anime and so is often criticised as by Type A otaku.
    - However, they make much better customers than the more discerning Type A otaku.
    - Recently there has been a huge increase in anime targeted at Type B otaku.
    - People who like K-ON!, Queen’s Blade, Strike Witches and so on would be in this class.

In fairness “Type A” seems more a description of anime “fans” than anime “otaku,” as most of the irrational and obsessive characteristics generally associated with otaku seem to be absent; on the other hand, it is in the hearts of “Type B” otaku that the seeds of the moe boom were sown…

Anime lovers will inevitably have to ask “Which type am I?”

man, i never liked that type a/b nonsense. Just, the category definitions and differences seem so ridiculous.

"simply enjoys anime" then "hates shallow anime". Maybe it's just me, but simply enjoying anime means you don't make a big deal out of story and characters and animation and stuff. To "simply enjoy" something is the opposite of critiquing it's story, or caring if it's "moe" or not.

Is proud of japans anime? what does that even mean? I think what "type A" is supposed to be is simply people who enjoy watching it for the story or writing. The stereotypical "anti-moe" fans.

And though I think type B is a bit better defined, it still seems shaky. Like, "doesn't know much about anime"? in what way?

And to put the fans of K-ON and Queens Blade in the same classification seems pretty ridiculous.

These classifications seem too limiting and ill-defined. But honestly, I just have a problem with "anime fandom" in general :\

Yeah, I didn't find those two categories too intelligent back when the article was posted. I also have to agree, to a degree, with Panda about the contradiction in the first category. "A person who simply enjoys anime." belongs to the definition of an anime fan, not an otaku. Somebody who simply enjoys something doesn't go out of his way to methodically hate some detail about it.

Still, it's good to remember that the more you like any aspect of a show, the more you will enjoy it, be it a style, a character, or anything else. Thus being able to make a big deal out of them is a good thing. You get more out of the time invested than somebody who stoically watches through the whole thing without as much as raising an eyebrow. But I don't necessarily see this as an otaku exclusive trait, nor does it need to be so negative that it makes you hate shows that lack the particular traits you normally enjoy the most.

While I've enjoyed anime of both types, I'd say I tend to get attached more to the type B anime. I've always found that character-centric stories are more appealing than story-centric characters. I felt the same way about American TV shows and movies.

Although the only anime I still actually watch is One Piece...

Trailer looks pretty sweet. I guess real-time graphics would look no where near as good.

The Australian one was just very slightly overdone, but it was still great.

    The Chinese one was funny.

Scottish one sounded the best, Russian one was stereotypical Russian not real one, but Indian was the funniest. German requires honorary mention because it is perfect for some vile character.

Assuming the person is clean enough, has no STD, and no one picks food with a used fork, yes.

Still, "no" is the right answer to Sapphire`s question.

That's the kind of thing that sounds sexy on paper but in practice it just looks both disgusting and unappetizing.

<@Terra> he told me this, "man actually meeting terra is so fucking big", and he started crying. Then he bought me hot dogs
