What makes you feel old?

That's my point, people care too much about what others think of them and at the same time care an incredible amount about the personal lives of others.
My mom for instance went the extra mile for her relatives and they basically returned the favour with shit on a platter, so she distanced herself from most of them.
As soon as she started not giving a damn her life became better, now she basically only cares about herself and her sons.
And as long as I'm not living some sort of criminal life, she's fine with it.

So if I brought that 20 y/o girl to meet my mom, she wouldn't be snide about it; why? Because it doesn't affect her, regardless if we share the same beliefs or not.
And my friends are all people that accept me as I am, because I chose to surround myself with those people; what good would it do me to surround myself with people with whom I can't even be myself?
So yeah they wouldn't care either.

And co-workers, bosses are just that: colleagues; just because you share a work place or class room with someone doesn't automatically make them privy to your personal life and is thus basically none of their business.
So why, especially in an enviroment where business is seperated from pleasure, should I care at all about some guy's opinion on my life?
Heck my "boss" at my freelance gig is 10 years older than his girlfriend; he's happy, she's happy, we are happy for them.

Like I said, it's easy for you to talk big online about how independent and free of public judgment and how you live life to the fullest and only know the right people and everything is peachy. Look at this guy with the badass mom and friends is what I was going for.
Too bad that in the real world she would totally make snide remarks at a younger girlfriend and actually already has cast me out because she's religious and I'm not.

So basically, for your mom, her relationship with the family was otherwise kind of crappy, so for whatever reason the cost of distancing herself from them was readily paid. I get that. Imagine someone whose family was actually good to them though in almost all ways. The family relationship is close, they enjoy each others company. Imagine the kind of family where a man and his wife both work but have a baby/young child and can easily bring that child over to the parents home for babysitting twice a week. In this family, love is reciprocated, help is reciprocated, and things are generally good...but the family is racist. A member of that family would find it difficult to bring in a mate of another race, because for them, the cost of dealing with the family's resentment or disowning them would be high. Something similar would hold if this person knew the family would severely frown upon a much younger mate.

Again, I get that for some people the relationship with the family isn't that great, so the decision to not give a shit is easy. But the better the relationship with the family is, the harder it is to make that decision. As far as friends are concerned, lets say you made those friends when you were in college, and now you're 50. That I think would be about 30 years for most. Who you are at 50 and were at 20 is definitely a different person, and as you've changed, you've changed in such a way they found acceptable. If you've had them for 30 years, they should be good friends. Now you bring home a twinkie, knowing some of them will give you shit. It's easier not to care with friends than with family, but it'd still be a consideration for some.
