Basically facebook/linkedin/etc are no better. I get requests to connect on linkedin from people I hardly know, much less would give or ask for a recommendation for a job. I also get "endorsed" for skills I don't have by people who have no idea if I'm familiar with that subject. And don't get me started on 1000+ facebook friends.
