"In the era when samurai controlled Japan... The Masked Demons annihilated all but one member of the Shinsengumi, who had worked to maintain the peace and public order in Kyoto.

Seven criminals are chosen as substitutes for the deceased Shinsengumi members, and they are led by Ichibanboshi, whose parents were also killed by the Masked Demons. He becomes a substitute for Commander Kondou Isami and goes after the Masked Demons with the other substitutes to avenge his parents' deaths.

Former criminals rise up to restore peace and order as their crazy story begins! Now is the time to shine the brightest!

Not my personal cup of tea, but for the audience looking for a show about posturing, trash talk, and bad guys serving as good guys to an extent... this was pretty fun. Although the animation pales compared to some other efforts this season, it gets the job done, the choreography has some life, and the pacing is great. If the fights get more technical, it'll grab my interest, but for now the personalities of the various criminals are the draw and I'll gladly handwave the plot hole of them just... cooperating with this poor deal given the tone of the show. Could be worth a watch if you are looking for some ahistorical period samurai action.

Not sure what direction the story is taking from here, but the characters are being done well and have meaningful interactions that support the intrigue. No beating around the bush, either, with character pasts being brought up when relevant, and the fights remain inventive. I wonder is this will become one of those shows where the main cast are slowly killed off tragically as their story arcs conclude?

Even the political commentary isn't grating- this is getting better, not worse as I expected it to.
