He did not use it at all. The chakra used him. Those eyes were the distinct mark that the kyuubi has taken over his mind. Naruto did not fight back in wave country. It was his body, but in reality Haku fought the kyuubi.
And why is it not flashy enough? Naruto does not pull the red chakra out because he is still a prankster and wants to show people something. All he wants is to win for his dream and for his promise. It does not matter how it looks. Right now he has most likely totally forgot about the audience. Making it too flashy and "RECOGNIZE ME, I'M A TOTAL MORON, LOOK, BIG MONSTER CHAKRA, ANNOY, RECOGNIZE!" would totally ruin that.
