Another 'Opps I'm awesome' series. I enjoy this series as a manga, but for whatever reason, the manga stopped being translated and so I expect the anime to surpass it (and adapt the LNs or untranslated manga), meaning I can finally see what happens next. I like the (slightly) more subtle take on swordsmanship and Beryl is a fine Ossan character. Grandpa entertained, too. Hopefully the actions scenes to come won't be skimped on.

Would have liked to watch this, but in the "Anime Spring 2025"-video some of you posted in another thread, the Youtuber said that the hero is another "oblivious to the hot girls around him"-protagonist. Can't stand that anymore. And this is a middle-aged guy, there's no excuse for him to have no interest in fucking.

"She's the only non-loli girl in the show, your honor!" will be my defense in court

Anyway, Episode 1 had pretty decent fighting animation. The animation is "slower" and has more focus on the movements, which I like. Episode 2 was a bit weaker but still fine.
I hope to see great things in the upcoming episodes.
I read the manga to a certain point (at least to where the latest translation by the group I chose exists) and the characters and combat styles seem pretty neat.

There is the Katana MC style, the hot headed dual wield girl, the two handed bastard sword smol girl, the spell fencer girl and the knight girl.

You would hate this then, because it is 100% that. Even though it's more nuanced than the usual "Dumb protag cares too much about fighting to notice girl likes him."

It makes more sense though as a middle-aged guy why he wouldn't think he has a shot.

He doesn't realize that he's cool, and thinks he's too old. So he just assumes there's no way they can be interested in him, and that they just view him as their teacher.

It doesn't help that they're not straightforward about their feelings, and when they hint at it, he just brushes it off as they're joking around with him.

    probably like 20+ years.
The dude is aged 45 or something (wiki says 44 and 45 later) the girls look like your usual female MC, so 16-20.

edit: but wiki says they are around 26 (the knight girl), and early twenties (2h + Sword Mage) or late twenties (dual wield adventurer/merc girl)
So yeah, still 20 years gap

I think all in their 20s+, but the sword magician hybrid I'm not sure, and there is already a grandma loli.

Interesting enough the series uses that to enable most of the students to not have trained with each other/know each other in that way. At least they weren't all in the same blessed class or the like, and as far as I can tell, only Knight girl seems infatuated by Baryl. The rest just look up to him in a 'head pats, please' kind of way.

Confirmed that red-head sees him more as a father figure, and is likely his oldest disciple we've seen thus far. Now lets see if he can parry a beak.

Redhead and Knight girl are behaving as though they are romantic rivals.

They don't like each other, and it would seem as though they fight for his attention, but red head hasn't hinted at liking him like that. I could certainly be wrong, though. I'm just not seeing the signs this early.

    Episode 4:

    What a devastating disappointment.
The whole training dungeon stuff was pretty amazing in the manga.
The 3 rookies themselves were already solid and used stuff like stealth and backstab and had "RPG classes"
Surena had a moment where she helped the group since they missed a goblin, that showed she would attach ropes to her sword and use them like a Rope Dart or Kusarigama, which clearly puts emphasis on the fact that she is an adventurer who uses unconvential methods, unlike the proper knight/guard etc.
The characters had a unique design and weren't just NPC 1,2 and 3 too.

    Man.. this makes me angry.
I've never actually thought that a Manga is like a billion times better than the show, but this isn't even comparable anymore. It's trying to be worse because I feel like the animation team simply doesn't KNOW how to handle the scenes.
It's doesn't even feel like a budget issue, just flat out lack of ability and technique.

Compare this to the fight we saw in the anime.
    Compare the flashbacks too.

Fuck this production...I'm actually mad at how bad it is.

Chapter 11 and the actual kill has such amazing key-frames as well. God damn it.
This is solid source material turned into generic slobber.
I noticed that this studio made Spice and Wolf 2024, wtf happened here.

I had been a while since I've read this, but it did seem somehow less impressive than I'd remembered it. Your comparison makes it clear that this is a low effort adaptation. Sad to see, but I'll still probably watch just to see where the story (roughly) goes. Aside from the reduced fights, the characterization and world building are about the same so its not like there is nothing here; just that the best part of this series, the action, we can expect to be phoned in.

I was kinda confused when he was just sorta hopping across the lava with no issues.

It's not merely hot rock, it was shown to be liquid magma. So unless he's got magic shoes, his feet should be gone.

Everything in that fight was just bad.
It's absolutely not understandable why they didn't go with the original, which could've looked bad also, but at least it wouldn't have been as bad.

The whole scene in which he flew away with the monster for a few miles just to land directly in front of the cage again was absolute garbage too.
Way to ruin an awesome monster... when it lost both it's eyes during the manga fight, and tried to go out in a final blaze, overpowering MC like that, it was really cool looking.

Same issue with the girl climbing up the hill/cliff, just so it could drop down from it (which took so freaking long too, lol). Such a weird way for ther to join the fight again.
And worst of all, this clearly looked like the girl did all the work, he did basically nothing. That's just not what was supposed to happen and makes the girl hyping him up annoying.
