Itachi has no other option but to die really, if he surrenders then the leaf will execute him.
You cant get away with murdering a clan when you just want to say 'hey stop i'm good now leave me alone' its something thats going to be on Itachis back for the rest of his life and means hes eventually going to die.
If he does give up being a shinobi, Sasuke will probably murder him the first chance he gets.
I dont think that everyone bad will die, for good to exist there has to be evil. Its just that Itachi has made sure that he'll die one day by keeping Sasuke alive and telling him to train to kill him. Once Orochimaru taps into Sasukes potential (which we know is more then Itachi's) he'll get stronger quicker and we'll see them face off.
Also as we know, the only one that can defeat the mange sharigan by looking at it directly is a member of the same blood.
Now why would Itachi leave Sasuke alive if hes the only one who can defeat that technique and also make Sasuke want to kill him.
Itachi wants to die, when Sasuke reaches his potential though.

What's the first most significant goal? Naruto becoming Hokage? Boooring.
Naruto has as much buisness killing Itachi, as Sasuke as of becoming Hokage.
They're two completely different dimensions, that just can't be combined. Anybody that even contemplates Naruto killing Itachi is just freakin stupid.

if he dies to Naruto then the whole reason for Sasukes existance is gone, just as if Sasuke became hokage, Narutos life would be over.

Exactly. I don't know why so many idiot fanboys think Naruto will kill Itachi, or even dream of it. So what if he has the Kyuubi. It's not like he'll use it to do every little thing in the series.
If Naruto summon Gamabunta and reaches most of the kyubi's chakra (he hasen't got much chakra from kyubi yet) he'll probably be a match for Itachi... Maybe he'll win, but then he's gotta have 100 % of the original kyubi chakra though.
No one is a match for the raw power of the Kyuubi, no one.

True, tho Naruto in Kyubi would be dumb in a way...there wouldnt be anyone in the entire series that could stop him. Its like being invincible. How dull would that become?
Given how dull Naruto's fights already are? Pretty damn dull all right.
But, I do agree. The Kyuubi is a bullshit power that takes away any creativity Naruto can use in his fights.

Narutos rasengen isnt enough to impress me, he still has no style at all.
everything he does is just charge at the enemy and do an attack that you can see coming at least 20 seconds before he hits (i'm sure ninjas would know how to avoid a straight on punch or kick) he looks like hes a little 5 year old fighting with the 'techniques' he uses.
Even Sakura out did Naruto in style, although alot of people will disgree just on the fact that they're girls and they're 'weak' - also because they both liked Sasuke and all the Naruto fans automatically hate Sasuke likers, and love Hinata
i'm not really a fan of the unstoppable character (although there are several ways to stop Naruto that i'm sure they'll forget to do, such as the remaining sound nin sealing his kyuubi up... I MEAN GEEZ THEY EVEN SAID THEMSELVES THEY'RE MASTER SEALERS) ahem anyway

remember how everyone keeps going on about a life of just revenge will be empty after the goal is accomplished? (or maybe just kakashi said that)
i would expect naruto to kill itachi after sasuke comes to the realization that revenge isnt a goal worth having in life

Insomniac: While the Kyubi may be the most powerful being in Naruto, I don't think that he is undefeatable. There is Gaara's demon, Gamma Bunta, and lot's of strong Ninja's in the Leaf village for the Kyubi to contend with.

Dude, why do you think everyone always makes such a giant deal about Kyubi? hes not so highly regarded for nothin. I bet he could make mince meat out of Gaaras demon, and Gama Bunta would be owned too. I mean..this demon is crazy strong.

what? dude, no. why the hell would naruto kill itachi? also, sasuke isn't gonna kill itachi out of revenge, he's gonna kill him because he has to (ie, save someone). sauske has to kill itachi no matter what his reason is. if anyone else kills him, then...naruto won't become the hokage.

It took on the whole of Kohona. killed alot of them too and it didnt look like it was going to stop anytime soon, it took the 4th sealing it (not fighting it) to win.
Basically this tells us that you cannot beat the Kyuubi in a fight
Gamabunta is no where near as strong as the Kyuubi as just its tails were enough to destroy trees, and hes got 9 tails
the reason why theres such a big deal about the Kyuubi is if it ever returns there will be no one to stop it, now that the 3rd and 4th are gone. It would destroy each village systematically
I don't think Gama Bunta is as powerful as people make him out to be. The 4th was riding atop his head in his battle against the Kyuubi, but still lost with everything he had. Gama Bunta. Jutsus. All of Konoha.
Now, what I'm wondering is.. where were the other villages when Kyuubi was released?
