Well, don't bother with the chuunins getting killed so easily. It's just adapted to the audience. The one who is with Hokage-sama is - in the manga - totally splattered against the wall. When Kakashi protects Sakura the kunais go straight into the sounds' heads and at the time talking to her about waking the others up he is over and over with blood.
