The reason why everyone thinks Garra beat Kimimaro is because Garra gave him a royal beatdown. Garra did so many badass things. It was still badass for Kimmmaro to take all of those blows and was still able to rebound from them but generally he was on the receiving end so it seemed more like Garra was in control of the fight.
oh, yeah, let's just completely ignore the part where kimimaro was inches away from putting holes in lee and gaara's head at the end right before kimimaro died. it must've been gaara's "OH SHIT WE'RE DEAD" look that killed kimimaro.

edit: and while we're at it, let's just ignore wht gaara said in the end about how they would've gotten owned if it weren't for the disease.
