I very much doubt a cowardly, emo main character would have made FSN glorious... Shirou was stupid with his overly virtuous wannabe hero attitude, but at least he faced the troubles head on and never wanted to run away, much less fall into depression. I instantly disliked Prototype main char.

On the other hand, I totally loved the "alter-Kotomine-Kirei" evil guy. Maybe he was too evil for FSN. Too much of a give-away.

I feel as if part of his character was reused for Fate/Zero's caster.
