Proxy was too strong, of course, like for any fiction.
Just to remind you, everyone is too old to be in that thread in the first place.
My answer then was just to point that some people had other references with dragonball because their young age was before dbz, in the db era.

All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening. And then: Golf.

ill agree that we are all too old for this thread actually, but ill say that because of that i can actually see things from a different point of view, instead of asking for things like "why is gohan so weak he is such a disappointment" i can talk about his stronger attributes as a character as a whole...

on the other hand you are implying that "other people" (you in this case...) had references with dragon ball before dbz when they were young because they are older, which by itself is completely false...
first of all we are talking in an era where the internet didnt exist, so unless you lived in japan or knew japanese at a young age (most unlikely) and had tons of money for imports... you actually didnt watched "at the same era" as when it was released but saw it when it was translated in your country... for example db was translated to latin america in 1994-5(?) almost 9 years after the release of the first episode...
second of all, you can always give video tapes/digital copies to a 5 year old kid of dragon ball at any time and he will also "grown up" watching goku and krillin training at roshi's "in the db era"

We've only had a 2 years lag in France, started spring 1986 in Japan, spring 1988 in France. Which is quite small since there's the dubing and all.

As for tapes and all. You could always do that with young children, but not preteens or teens as they have to share common interrest at school.

So back to the real topic, yes Gohan never grew his potential as a fighter. That's his choice, even in our world where you see war/battles everywhere, not everyone chooses to fight. He became a side character like Krillin himself. Too bad ? Maybe.
He's not even a scholar or scientist that could help the plot move forward like Bulma.

All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening. And then: Golf.
