Granted, he hates fusing because he hates relying on anyone's power than his own, but he hates losing more.

Retcon? character progression? plot hole? If he wants immortality so much he had like over 9000 chances to do so (didn`t they have the dragon balls as a bingo prize or whatever in battle of the gods?), he clearly doesn`t cares about it anymore.
