I'd say it's a test.
Ashito vision is so restricted by his will to be a forward that he doesn't understand much about anything else.
Playing a while as a defender will give him another point of view about how an attack happens and how the team reacts after a failed atempt.
Ashito's true worth isn't a forward, but a play maker organising the attack and defence, getting balls from defence and distributing them to forwards. But to do that he needs to understand how defence works, it will also improve his bird's eye view gift.

But the trainer said he wants him to be a full-back. It's not "training" to get the pov down so he understands which side to attack from and what the job of a full-back is while attacking.

Unless of course it has all been a lie, which I would find to be stupid though because the lie wouldn't help anyone.
